Age

Although ideal candidates for weight loss surgery are commonly between the ages of 18 and 60-years-old, certain health conditions may make it an appropriate option for others.

  • Adolescents, Under Age 18

Traditional types of medical weight management have been shown to have some benefits for patients under age 18. However, if the patient is 75 pounds overweight or more, and has a serious related condition such as diabetes or hypertension, they may be considered for surgery once all other therapies have been exhausted.

At Scottsdale Bariatric Center, we thoroughly evaluate candidates in this age group through a comprehensive history and physical exam. We also conduct laboratory testing to exclude genetic and medical conditions, which can be treated without surgery. Expert counseling, nutrition and exercise programs are essential parts of our treatment before surgery is a consideration.
  • Mature Patients, Over Age 60 Patients over age 60 do face special risks for any surgical procedures. Therefore, we evaluate these patients on a case-by-case basis, determining overall health and risk factors. After a thorough analysis of your completed new patient packet, we will decide whether you are an appropriate candidate.

Prior Weight Loss Surgery

Patients who have already had a procedure for weight loss surgery and have regained weight or are experiencing difficulties may enter the Scottsdale Bariatric Program through a special process.

Smoking/Tobacco Use

If you currently smoke or use nicotine products, you will need to quit for at least 60 days prior to surgery with our program. We may ask you to confirm this through a random urine nicotine screening test in order to protect your health and safety.
